description

This will be a historic inauguration of the 32nd Bydgoszcz Opera Festival! For the first time in the history of the Bydgoszcz opera stage, Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti will be performed — a masterpiece of Italian bel canto, inspired by Walter Scott’s Romantic tale based on true events.

Love and intrigue drive the title heroine to madness. This story — inspired by events that took place in the 17th century within the Scottish Dalrymple family — ends in the tragedy of two lovers. First told in Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, it was later transformed into one of Gaetano Donizetti’s most celebrated operatic dramas. As the host of the Festival, Opera Nova will inaugurate the 32nd Bydgoszcz Opera Festival with the premiere of Lucia di Lammermoor.

The production will be undertaken by Thaddeus Strassberger — an outstanding American opera director and set and costume designer, renowned for productions staged at the world’s leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Los Angeles Opera, and Theater an der Wien.

A recipient of the European Opera Prize, he will bring an international perspective and a sense of grandeur to the Bydgoszcz premiere - worthy of an event inaugurating the Festival.

Why do I go to the opera?

"Because for me it is always a celebration, during which you can meet the spirit of the operatic past, its present and you get a chance to run into its future" - writes Ilona Słojewska in the pages of Dziennik Teatralny Kujawy on the occasion of World Opera Day 2024. Because every opera performance is a uniquely constructed work, in which the voice and music give so many emotions that whenever you pass by its building, you feel the vibrations, for which you could visit it every day.
