“Gershwin’s music has an enormous emotional range — from jazzy rhythms to lyrical melodies. Some passages practically call for tap dancing, as in the film, but in the end I decided to work exclusively with the ballet company itself. At times, however, I deliberately introduce movements into the choreography that evoke tap dancing — a certain syncopation and swing. One of the characters in the performance is Adam, a pianist struggling with wartime memories. For this character I used Second Prelude, one of Gershwin’s more melancholic pieces. I also created characters who do not appear in the film — the so-called ‘shadows of emotion.’ They accompany the protagonists and symbolize their inner states: fear, desire, and memories. <...> It is, of course, a story about love, but also about the conflict between gratitude and genuine feeling. Most important, however, is Gershwin’s music itself — full of warmth, lightness, and a touch of melancholy — which is not very often interpreted through dance. I would like audiences to experience a moment of reflection in the theater, but also a sense of relaxation. Not every performance has to save the world — my Prometheus is philosophical and serious, whereas An American in Paris is meant to bring a breath of fresh air, joy, and the feeling that in the art of ballet one can discover complete harmony.”

The new season at Opera Nova is taking shape - and you can be a part of it right now. Tickets for performances scheduled for September, October, and November 2026 are already available online and at the Opera Nova box office. A new price list applies to tickets for the 70th artistic season. There is, however, one small exception: our gift cards can still be purchased at the current price until the end of August.

In the new season, we invite you to the production of An American in Paris - four performances on 17, 18, 19 and 20 September 2026. Set against the backdrop of the vibrant, jazz-filled Paris of the 1920s, Krzysztof Pastor's original ballet, featuring George Gershwin's music in new arrangements by Przemysław Zych, tells a captivating story of love, difficult choices and the lingering memories of the post-war years.

"Because for me it is always a celebration, during which you can meet the spirit of the operatic past, its present and you get a chance to run into its future" - writes Ilona Słojewska in the pages of Dziennik Teatralny Kujawy on the occasion of World Opera Day 2024. Because every opera performance is a uniquely constructed work, in which the voice and music give so many emotions that whenever you pass by its building, you feel the vibrations, for which you could visit it every day. And if,...
